March 20th marks the one-year anniversary of the United States
invasion
of Iraq. In a time of instant amnesia about the human, social, and
economic costs of war, we invite you to join us in remembering those
who
have given their lives.
The combined members of the American Friends Service Committee, the
Buddhist Peace Fellowship, The Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, and
Priority Peace invite you and your community to an interfaith
commemorative candlelight vigil for the American soldiers and Iraqis
killed since the beginning of the war.
The vigil will be held on Sunday, March 21, starting at 5:30pm at the
Washington Park boathouse pavilion on the lake. It will be
contemplative in nature, with no speeches, no displayed signs or
banners, and no political agenda other than coming together to
recognize
and to mourn. Each participant will bring or be given a candle and
will
have the opportunity to read at a microphone the name of someone
killed
in the war. The lake will be encircled with candles while the names
of
those who have given their lives are read as dusk descends.
Refreshments will be served at St. John's Lutheran Church nearby at
the
conclusion of the vigil. In the event of inclement weather, the
vigil
will be moved to this church as well.
People of all religious and political persuasions are invited to
participate, and we expect a sizable turnout. Churches, synagogues,
and
temples all over the city have been invited to adopt and read a
number
of names. We invite you to help us prepare for this event by passing
the word, making announcements at services or in meetings, and
pledging
the number of people from your community who will attend and read a
name. Please call 303-370-9107 if you have questions, pledges, or
suggestions.
Sincerely,
Jeff Franklin, Member
