Progressive radio will reach half of Colorado with KGNU's debut of 1390AM
this Sunday!

Kris Abrams took leave from her position as senior producer of Democracy
Now! in NYC to move to Boulder and spearhead a drive to acquire a Denver
community radio signal. And she did it! She herded all the cats who were
constantly losing their keys and mittens, and pulled it off!

SUNDAY. 1390AM. Community Radio -- Progressive media a-borning in
the teeth of corporate media consolidation and squelching of dissent.

	celebrate with us!

All,
After over a year of discussion, research, negotiations and fundraising, the
moment is here.

KGNU will debut on 1390 AM in Denver this Sunday at 9 a.m., bringing live
coverage from the streets of New York City, where hundreds of thousands are
expected to protest against the Republican National Convention. Please help
spread the word (details below)!

Come celebrate with us!
Event: Hear the sounds of NYC’s streets at a party at the Merc!
Venue: Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street, Denver
Date: Sunday, Aug. 29
Time: Drop in anytime between 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

We reached a deal with KJME just 6 weeks ago, and signed the final documents
last week. Purchase price: $4.1 million. Down payment: $1 million, coming
due at closing. Closing is triggered by the FCC approval, which we expect as
early as October. Operating Agreement: today, KGNU pays an additional
$100,000 for the Operating Agreement, a separate contract which allows us to
begin broadcasting in Denver starting Sunday - weeks and possibly months
before closing. KGNU spearheaded the Operating Agreement because we felt it
is important to begin broadcasting to an additional two million people in
time to cover this critical election. Starting Sunday, KGNU will reach half
the population of Colorado.

Fundraising: We have raised over $1,220,000! But there is still work to do,
and quickly. In order to maximize matching gifts of up to $200,000, we must
raise an additional $40,000 by tomorrow. In addition, some of our donors
have pledged money over time, so of the $1.22 million, we will have only
$925,000 in hand in time for closing. Subtracting $100,000 for the
Operating Agreement from that, this means we must raise an additional
$175,000 by October.

Here's how you can help: Please help spread the word! Tell all your
friends, colleagues, family, neighbors, and organizations in Denver (and
list-serves) to tune into KGNU-1390 AM. To make it easier, we have written a
sample email - go to http://kgnudenver.org and click on Spread the Word, or
copy and paste the text at the bottom of this email into a new email. (Of
course, feel free to edit what we've written, or write your own!) This
grassroots publicity campaign will be instrumental in KGNU-Denver's success.

Donate! Please go to http://kgnudenver.org. We've raised over $1.2 million
so far, but still need to raise another $40,000 by tomorrow and another
$175,000 by October. Today, we launch the 1,390 x $1,390 campaign. If
1,390 people become Founding Supporters of KGNU-Denver 1390 AM and donate
$1,390, we will raise nearly $2 million. The entire board and staff of KGNU
have made "stretch" gifts - meaning we have given much more than we ever
would normally, but not so much that it changes our quality of life - and
now we are asking everyone else to do the same. Your gift can be spread out
over 1,2 or 3 years if necessary. Go to kgnudenver.org to make your
donation all at once, or call (303) 449-4885 to arrange a monthly or yearly
pledge. Please donate whatever you can - whether it is more or less than
$1,390. If you are able to give at the 5-figure level, please contact me
directly at the station or at kris@kgnu.org.

Now, we will be able to incorporate volunteers into this campaign! If you
are interested in volunteering or have ideas about how to get the word out,
please email our Outreach Coordinator at vaishalee@kgnu.org.

We hope to hold trainings in Denver soon for those interested in learning
how to report and file stories. More info on that to come.

This email list will be used - sparingly! - to update you on the Denver
Community Radio Campaign. To unsubscribe, send an email to
denvercommunityradio-unsubscribe@kgnu.org

Your support is what made this possible. Thank you! We hope you enjoy KGNU
1390 AM!

Help spread the word!
subject line: this Sunday! independent radio in Denver!
body of email:
Friends,
This Sunday, August 29th at 9 a.m., tune into 1390 AM and hear the birth of
grassroots, independent radio in Denver!

KGNU, Boulder County’s independent community radio station, broadcasts
independent, hard-hitting news and public affairs as well as an eclectic mix
of music including world, hip-hop, folk, reggae, and bluegrass. KGNU gives
listeners the opportunity to take the media into their own hands, providing
training, equipment and access to the airwaves.

Now, in response to an increasing number of requests from Denver residents,
KGNU is expanding to Denver.

If you’re frustrated by infotainment masquerading as news, or if you’re
tired of pre-programmed, profit-generating play-lists piped in from
corporate HQ, tune in on Sunday and be part of this unprecedented campaign
to reclaim the airwaves and return them to the public.
